De Roos

De Roos is a historic windmill located in Delft, Netherlands, and is considered one of the most significant landmarks in the city's history.

Overview

  • Originally constructed on the southern city wall of Delft in 1679, it has undergone multiple restoration projects and remains operational to this day.
  • The De Roos mill was originally built as a post mill called Gasthuismolen, which was destroyed during a storm in the second half of the 17th century.

History

The site was then rebuilt above the western fortifications of the Dutch municipality in 1679. Two principal phases of implementation followed this reconstruction: one in 1728 and another from the 1760s.

  • Despite periods of inactivity, particularly during restoration and repair, the mill remains operational.

Architecture

De Roos is a conical windmill of the skirt and platform type, constructed of bricks and jointed stones. The mill features a rotating cap and is equipped with a complex set of mechanical elements for milling work.

The surrounding house and warehouse are also constructed of masonry bricks and feature facades with gables.

Location

The De Roos mill is situated at Phoenixstraat 112 in Delft, Netherlands. The site has undergone significant changes over the years, including the construction of the Willem of Orange railway tunnel in the second half of the 2010s.

Heritage Status

The De Roos grain mill, along with its surrounding structures, was designated as a national monument by the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency on June 29, 1967.

  • De Roos is open to the public during specific hours: Wednesdays from 13:00-16:30, Fridays from 13:00-16:30, and Saturdays from 10:00-16:30.
  • Visitors can view the mill from outside, but ladders inside make it impossible for wheelchair users.
