Het Jonge Schaap

The Het Jonge Schaap is a wooden wind-powered sawmill located in the Zaanse Schans, in the municipality of Zaanstad, Netherlands.

The original mill from 1680 was dismantled in 1942. Between 2005 and 2007, a replica was constructed on the site of the former oil mill "De Ster," which operated from approximately 1685 to 1798.

History

The replica was based on detailed drawings made by Anton Sipman before the original mill was demolished. It is notable as one of the eight hexagonal mills in the Netherlands and the only remaining hexagonal sawmill.

Architecture

The Het Jonge Schaap features a unique hexagonal design, with three saw frames, including one for making grooves, and two capstan hoists for placing logs on the saw carriage.

The mill's body is made of larch wood from near Hannover, Germany, and the stepped base is made of giant arborvitae wood (red cedar).

The hexagonal roof is thatched.

Location

The mill is located at Kalverringdijk 31A in Zaandam, Netherlands.

It is situated on the site of the former oil mill "De Ster," which operated from approximately 1685 to 1798.

Visiting Information

The Het Jonge Schaap is open to visitors from Monday to Saturday from 09:30 to 16:30 and Sunday from 10:30 to 16:30.

Visitors can explore the mill and learn about its history and operation.

Technical Details

The mill features three saw frames, including one for making grooves, and two capstan hoists for placing logs on the saw carriage.

The crankshaft is made by the Duyvis machine factory in Koog aan de Zaan and was cold-pressed into assembly using liquid nitrogen.

Heritage Status and Preservation Efforts

The Het Jonge Schaap is a protected historical site and is part of the Zaanse Schans museum complex.

It has been recognized as one of the eight hexagonal mills in the Netherlands and the only remaining hexagonal sawmill.

Notable Historical Events or Famous Millers

Anton Sipman made detailed drawings of the original mill before it was demolished, which were used to construct the replica Het Jonge Schaap.
