Ashcombe Mill

Ashcombe Mill was constructed in 1828 on Kingston ridge to the east of the village of Kingston near Lewes, East Sussex, England.

The original mill was built by Samuel Medhurst, a local millwright responsible for several other windmills in the area.

History

  • The mill was destroyed during a gale in 1916.

Architecture

Ashcombe Mill is a post mill, featuring a distinctive tower design characteristic of this type of mill.

The reconstruction facsimile, completed in 2010, retains the original's architectural features, including its steel frame and wooden cladding.

Location

The mill stands on Juggs Road, near the village of Kingston, East Sussex, England.

It is situated on a ridge to the east of the village, overlooking the surrounding landscape.

Current Status and Use

Ashcombe Mill has been reconstructed as residential accommodation, with planning permission granted in 2007 by Sussex Mills Group.

The new building is designed to be environmentally friendly and generate electricity for the National Grid.

A steel frame was constructed in early 2009, followed by the attachment of wooden cladding later that year.

By the end of 2010, the tailpole and rear steps had been fixed, the structure painted white, and the mill turned on its axis for the first time.

Heritage Status

The original Ashcombe Mill is reported to have been a Grade II listed building, but no further information is available.

Visiting Information

Ashcombe Mill is not open to the public as a tourist attraction.

However, it can be viewed from the outside and is an important part of the local landscape.

Notable Historical Events or Famous Millers

Samuel Medhurst, the millwright responsible for building Ashcombe Mill, was also involved in constructing other windmills in the area.

Technical Details

The reconstructed facsimile features one pair of grindstones.

The surplus electricity generated by the mill is reportedly sufficient to power three houses.
