Moulton Windmill
The Moulton Windmill, located in the village of Moulton, South Holland, England, is a restored nine-storeyed tower mill built around 1822 by Robert King.
History
- The mill was originally a fully functioning windmill, grinding wheat and other products. However, on December 20, 1894, the sails were damaged in a harsh gale and were removed in 1895. A steam system was installed to power the mill soon after.
- In 1890, A. W. Tindall leased the mill from the King family until 1921. The Biggadike family took over tenancy of the mill in 1924 and continued to mill, albeit small quantities of animal feed, until 1995. A local campaign was established to restore the Grade I listed mill to full working condition.
- The restoration project, which began in 2003, featured on the first series of BBC2's Restoration with Tim Wonnacott as its Celebrity Advocate. The project won a large Heritage Lottery Fund grant, and through fundraising events, the "Friends of Moulton Mill" campaign successfully restored and refurbished the mill's structure and added a new cap.
- In March 2007, the mill ground flour again, and in June 2008, the reefing gallery was restored. New sails were fitted on November 21, 2011, to complete the restoration of the mill. On April 28, 2013, the first bag of flour in over 100 years was ground with wind power.
